Hazardous substances
Hazardous substances for the environment, such as mineral oil, corrosive chemicals, refrigerants (PFCs, HFCs), biocides, solvents, and other chemicals, are used at CERN for industrial and experimental activities. In order to reduce the risks of accidents and damage to the environment, special attention is given to the handling and storage of these substances, according to the applicable regulations in force. Each year, inspections are carried out all over CERN's premises to ensure that the chemical inventories (CERES) and the associated risk assessments are up-to-date, and that appropriate measures are taken for the safe storage of chemicals (i.e. recipient tightness and adequacy of retention).
