HSE's contribution in PATRAM 2019

Patram

Several members of the HSE Unit represented CERN at the International Conference on the Transport of Radioactive Materials, PATRAM 19, that took place in New Orleans (LA-USA) from the 4th to the 9th of August 2019.  Every three years PATRAM brings together worldwide experts from government, industry and research organizations to exchange information on all aspects of packaging and transportation of radioactive materials. https://www.inmm.org/Event-Microsite/About

At the PATRAM 19 conference, Nicolas Riggaz (photo) presented the new classification method by dose rate measurement that has recently been introduced at CERN for intra- and inter-site radioactive transports.

The studies by Thomas Frosio and Philippe Bertreix on the calculation of new limit values for radioactive transports were mentioned in several conference sessions and also on a poster. The studies in question have been carried out within the framework of the Standardisation Committee for Radioactive Transports (TRANSCC) of the IAEA.

The conference participants showed much interest in the studies carried out at CERN and acknowledged the high quality of the work presented and its usefulness for the community.

The conference also enabled the CERN experts to keep themselves informed of trends and developments in radioactive transport regulations and to network with different institutions, such as TRANSCC. The CERN experts met Stephen Whittignham, the Scientific Secretary of TRANSCC, and confirmed CERN’s interest in participating in the committee as an observer.
